Hammer Technology first publicly talk about VR: VR is not successful today because of these reasons

March 21, 2023
Virtual Reality was only a term known by practitioners in 2012 and has now become a hot spot in all technology industries. We believe that virtual reality is the next universal human-computer computing platform.

VR, AR, MR, CR... I don't know what R will happen in the future, but it can be called Head Mount Display (HMD) because it is a monitor that is worn on the head.

"HMD will be the last screen of humanity." I don't know who said it. It may be Mark Twain.

First of all, according to the human needs for the equipment to make a judgment, from the earliest record of information in the stone - stone is a difficult to interact, you have to write difficult, it is not possible to move, a wide range of display devices; then invented a sheet of paper , screen, and then invented the TV, computer, and finally in the past few years we invented a smart phone or called a handheld computer, is an interactive small screen. Historically, it has been difficult to balance convenience and display area. Either convenient, but the display area is limited; either the display area is large and cannot be moved. Until the HMD appeared, it could be moved and it was a 360-degree display. It was already the largest display.

Let's look at the PC again. The PC has entered a slow downward trend since 2011. Looking back at the smart phone industry, from the first generation of Apple to last year, 2015 was an upward trend. In the first quarter of this year, there was the first recession since 1994 when IBM invented the first smart phone.

(In the industry) To find an export, the export must be at the platform level, and the second must be at the general level. Only the HMD may satisfy the platform level and versatility.

So, why has VR not been completed today? From the past needs of users, the needs of the entire industry chain, and the human demand for imagination, we all believe that VR can certainly be achieved, but why is it not yet?

First of all, it does not have a unified form of interaction:

This year's best-in-class VR, AR equipment such as: Gear VR, Rift CV1 and so on, none of their interactive devices look the same.

On a PC, the interactive device is a mouse and keyboard, and there is at most one touchpad. Mobile is simpler, just a touch screen.

The number of devices in the field of VR and AR HMD can be seen. This is incomplete statistics. There are 10 interaction scenarios under incomplete statistics. We don't need 10 kinds. We just need an elegant interactive program, but it hasn't appeared yet. This is the first reason why it hasn't become.

The second reason is that there is no unified operating system:

HTC Vive, Oculus, PSVR, OSVR, and HoloLens all have different platforms, and the SDK is different. There are at least nine operating systems available on the market.

The third reason for the lack of success is the limitation of hardware specifications:

The first is that the VR screen does not achieve the beauty we imagined.

We look at the resolution again. The mainstream manufacturers are 2160×1200, but only half of each eye is allocated to 1200×1080. What’s worse is that the limit resolution actually accepted by the naked eye is 730×730. What is the concept? ? The pixels that our VR device can see today in 2016 are equal to the 1998 15-inch CRT display.

In terms of consumption performance, in this case, the conservative estimate is 2.1 times that of the 1080P display game. For the first generation of HMD, we also need to calculate at least 4 million pixels for each frame, and keep at least 90 frames. It takes 11.11ms to calculate a frame. We need to have a stronger computer. We need three graphics cards, eight core CPUs, and then water cooling...

Only 3% of our computers on Earth can meet the needs of VR, 1% can meet the ideal needs of VR, and the worst, most people experience VR devices for the first time is such a computer, this is the most tragic . If we want to achieve the ideal picture, the retina-level picture, we need two 16K screens, 240 frame refresh rate.

More is from the limits of human beings. After entering the virtual world, the picture we see is flying, but the butt tells you to sit on a stool. This result will make you very dizzy; the fear is stronger and we have once feared. Feeling from the front of the 45-inch screen, now fear comes from all directions, 360 fear.

There is no unified interaction, no unified system, many hardware limitations, and humans themselves have more restrictions, which is why it has not been achieved.

When can it become? We say that 2014 is the first year of virtual reality, but the first year seems to be pushed back year after year. What happened in the first year and nothing happened.

When we look back at the entire technology industry timeline, there are basically several time periods when a company first invents a product, a company defines a standard, then a number of companies spread the standard, and then the product enters a platform.

How long does it take to go from a product invention to a company-defined standard? The PC has gone through 13 years. The smart phone invented the first smart phone from IBM and it took Apple 14 years to appear. From the appearance of HMD to the present, there have been no defined persons and it has gone through 21 years.
The factor that this matter can not be achieved is that the standard setter appears. He must make everything. This definer must be like iOS, everything from software to hardware to SDK to input devices. The company that defines the VR standard has not yet appeared.

Let's take a look at the current situation and what stage it is now, if we put the timeline in the 10-year dimension. From 2014 to 2020, we are still in the early stage of immature, and it is an immature closed stage. We believe that what will happen right now will change from closed to open. During the immature period, it will go from closed to open, then the definition of the standard appears - it must be a closed system, and then there will be a company called standard followers. Standard setters and standard followers are two things that are equally important to VR and AR. These two things mark when this matter can be achieved, so we think the second very important thing is the open platform. The emergence of.

I'm going to shoot my head now. I know these two things happen - VR, AR can be done.

When it will appear, we think that it will appear in 2019. It defines how VR will be done or how AR will appear. In the two years from 2019, there will be standard followers, that is, an open platform. This is a matter of 2019 and 2021. It is only now 2016. What do we do at this time? We don't want to do anything. Wait for it. No, it is very likely that only a very great company will be born at this stage (companies such as Adobe, Oracle, and EA were born during this period). Only in the early days of an industry can we have the opportunity for these entrepreneurs to enter the wave and become the industry's leading edge.

A pessimistic statistic: By 2019, the output value of the entire VR industry chain will be about 20 billion U.S. dollars. Based on optimistic statistics, standard setters and followers of standards will appear in 2025, and nine years later, the industry will reach 182 billion U.S. dollars. , more than the current PC industry's output value.

But what I want to say is that we are engaged in this industry with enthusiasm, not because of this figure, but the imagination of the entire human race. What I want to say is what we do. For the first time, it gives us almost unlimited humanity. The possibility to create a whole new world and create a real dream. This is the mission and dream of our generation. Thank you!

Luo Zixiong finally told us that Hammer Technology had entered the field of VR in 2015, and it was almost the first company and team to do VR in China. Since then, there have been no more than 5 individuals in the industry who have seen demos at the current stage of the hammer. All the feedback received was very surprising.

In addition, news from the supply chain shows that the hammer has just started the development of the VR all-in-one.
